UVSunSafe measures impact of sun
WHIPPANY, N.J. — The UVSunSafe LLC wristband, a new, easy-to-usetool that is designed to help people avoid overexposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, can help reduce the risk of skin cancer and painful sun damage.
The wristband is a sun-sensitive gauge. The user wraps it around his or her wrist, then applies sunscreen before going about outdoor activity. The band changes color to let the wearer know it’s time to reapply sunscreen–or get out of the sun.
UVSunSafe is designed to work with sunscreens of SPF 15 or higher, and will change color at different times depending on the SPF level. It can be worn in salt, fresh or chlorinated water.
“Right now, the only way to know if sunscreen is working is not toget sunburn–and by then, it’s too late,” says Dr. Michael Eidelman,a dermatologist at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan.
“The UVSunSafe wristband takes the guesswork out of outdoor recreation and gives accurate, real-time information that will help keep you and your family safe and healthy.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Epidemiologic data from the CDC also show that most skin cancers can be prevented with adequate protection from UV radiation.
